The Trap

Facebook’s news ticker can be a distraction at times, but then there are days like today when a friend comments on a post or article and I click over and read it … and am truly blown away. It was calledAn Open Apology to All of My Weight Loss Clients,” and reading it, I was near-tears. The author’s words are amazingly powerful and so brutally honest.

I found myself nodding the whole time … Yes, yes, yes!  It is all a giant scheme to make women (in particular) think we aren’t enough. That we need help, that we should look a certain way/be a certain size. And many of us — even smart, strong women — fall for it, hook, line and sinker … time and time again. Lord knows I did.

I think of my  2 1/2 year old daughter who prances around her room each morning, half-naked in her adorable little Days-of-the-Week underwear, Buddha belly sticking out with her arms and legs still covered in adorable “bracelets” (read as: delicious rolls!) … and pray she never, ever feels anything less than beautiful and perfect.

Because she is.

If I could only bottle up her body confidence and save it for when she is 8, 13, 18, 22, etc … I’d be a very rich woman. I never want her to body snark, poke at her hip flesh, restrict, over-exercise, judge her self-worth by the size of her jeans, or look in the mirror and see anything except the beautiful face staring back at her.

I want her to rise above. To know she is amazing, inside and out. And I never want her to fall for the trap that sucks so many women in.

How about you? What did you think after reading this?
